Make your dreams become a reality

Goal setting can be interpreted in many different ways. For the go-getters, goal setting is an excellent way to track progress, hit targets and get to where they want to be. For the less enthusiastic, goal setting isn’t considered as an important aspect of growing and is brushed under the carpet and for others goal setting is a thing of nightmares. By avoiding setting goals, some think they are also avoiding the disappointment that comes when the goals aren’t achieved, but that’s not how we do it at MarketMakers.

How is anyone expected to have a good chance at achieving their goals without a plan in place?

Visualising the end goal and understanding what it looks like, is the first step to achieving your dream. It is not selfish to have a personal need or want as your goal, this often helps to drive towards success when there is an internal desire trigger.

As well as internal, we also have external desire triggers, these are the triggers that are less personal for example a goal that has been set for you by someone else, this could be a target that has been set for you at work. Naturally, we are more likely to exceed when the triggers are internal. To help us stay motivated with these goals we can find an internal trigger. This could be recognising the personal development that comes with the targets we are set at work.

Goals can become a reality with a positive attitude. These 5 golden tips will start you on your journey to success:

  • Track your progress. Excel is a great tool to use for weight loss and financial goals as you can track your progression with graphs.
  • Do something every day and week to move towards your goal. Motivation is often the key to not giving up.
  • Share your dreams and targets with those around you so friends and family can help (you could even find a goal-buddy!)
  • SMART pneumonic is essential; Specific-Measurable-Achievable-Realistic-Time
  • Visual aids will help to keep your motivation going. (Screensavers of the holiday you want or photos to remind you of your weight loss and help you to keep going).

Another important aspect to achieving your goals is to deflect negativity…

Don’t let yourself or others bring you down on this journey. Remember, transforming the phrase “I can’t do that” to “I can’t do that yet” keeps your dream alive. It is important to only have positive energies around you and push out any negative thinkers! If you are coming across more barriers than you anticipated, consider changing the route you have planned to achieve your goal. Never change the goal itself as this can decrease personal morale. Positivity is the key; if you truly believe you can achieve the goal, the ‘how’ will come naturally.

Everything is just a small stepping stone towards the next event, if your path suddenly changes, just look for another stepping stone.

Methods of Success

Goal Mapping

A goal map will give you a direction to follow and a structure to ensure you achieve your dreams. It is a way to keep you constantly motivated and focused on the end goal. The map helps to link any multiple goals together and defines what success looks like for you.

What does ‘success’ look like to you?
  • What do I want?
  • What is my priority?
  • What does it look like?
  • Why do I want it?
  • When do I want it?
  • How will I achieve it?
  • What help will I require?

Ensure to always set a date and not move the goal posts. You will get to the goal, even if it means changing how you get there.

The Goals Pyramid Methodology

The goals pyramid is another way in which you can look at planning and implementing your final goal. This method strongly looks at the reward of the goal as the major incentive. Often, if the goal has an internal trigger the reward will be greatly beneficial to you. If the strategy has been positively constructed, the behaviours will come automatically.

‘Goals Now’ Methodology

Take your ‘someday’ goal, and imagine where that could be in milestones; The ’10 year’ goal, the ‘5 year’ goal, the ‘1 year’ goal, the ‘3 month’ goal, the ‘monthly’ goal, the ‘weekly’ goal and the ‘daily’ goal. Each of these ‘mini’ goals can help you break down that ‘someday’ goal into realistic targets. This method can be very powerful in changing your mind set and helping you to achieve your targets. One small action today can set a chain reaction for the next year or five years.

It is highly likely that whilst your plan is for ‘someday’ or in 10 years, due to your focus it is likely you will achieve it in a much shorter time.

Each of these methods of success, no matter which you choose, will be the vital tool in the journey towards your goal. The main key to your success is you! The amount of time and effort you put into achieving your goal, will establish how well and effectively it is achieved. You can do anything that you put your mind to, so don’t let anyone or anything get in your way!
