Referrals are a cheap way of finding new talent. Just don’t forget to do due diligence.

Staff at Daisy, the telecoms company, have saved the business £330,000 over the past year by persuading friends and contacts to fill vacancies there. Nearly 30% of the company’s new employees are now found this way, rather than through agencies that charge fees, said Jo Clifford, head of recruitment at Daisy. Businesses can make “massive savings” by reducing the use of recruitment agencies and turning to employees’ personal and social media networks.

As a company MarketMakers saves an average £1,040 each time it hires someone based on a staff referral rather than using an agency. Henry Braithwaite, MarketMakers operations director gave his thoughts and finding to The Sunday Times.
