Wrapping Up Wellbeing Month
Guest Speaker – Sam Evans
To conclude Wellbeing Month in the office we had guest speaker Sam Evans, a Mental Health Nurse come to speak with the team about mindfulness, mental health and different ways people can overcome feelings of panic and anxiety.
Sam, who has previously trained in CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy), currently works in the children’s & young people A&E department. She has over 15 years training focussing on mental health, and helping people manage and cope with feelings commonly associated with mental health.
‘Behaviours are easier to challenge than challenging thoughts’
‘Panic won’t last, anxiety won’t last in that moment’
Tip:
Cooling yourself down can lower levels of anxiety. Try using a cool flannel or a cold can of drink.
What is Mindfulness?
When we practice mindfulness, our thoughts tune into what we’re sensing in the present moment rather than rehashing the past or imagining the future.
Unhelpful Thinking Styles:
- Emotional Reasoning
- Overgeneralising
- Labelling
- Jumping to conclusions
- Magnification
- Disqualifying the positive
- All or nothing thinking
- Personalisation
- Should/ must thinking
The first and most important step in overcoming unhelpful thinking styles is to recognise when you’re doing them.
Tip:
Make a self- sooth kit, a small bag or box filled with different things to stimulate each sense. For example, a favourite sweet for taste or scented hand creams for scent.
If you would like to learn more about some of the topics mentioned in our session, or if you are unsure of where to go for advice/ guidance, then some of the below websites can be really helpful.
