Future Stars Reign Again

The University of Portsmouth's entrepreneurial students were recently awarded prizes totaling £5000 at Stage One of the Enterprise Challenge awards ceremony. This annual two-stage competition, run by the centre for Enterprise, is for budding student entrepreneurs who wish to start-up their own business and we had a grand total of 12 lucky winners. This year, we saw a 60% increase in Stage One entries, proving that University of Portsmouth students are now more entrepreneurial than ever.

Paul Thomas presented the prizes. Paul is the 23 year old entrepreneur and managing director of telemarketing firm, Market Makers.

Market Makers work with companies who need to promote and market their services or products in order to achieve their maximum growth potential.

At the ceremony Paul gave a vibrant and inspirational talk about his own experiences in becoming a successful entrepreneur and gave us some top tips for success:

• If you are convinced something will work - do it.
• It is important to have an outside party, perhaps a mentor, to look at the business once it's up and running as they will be able to give you valuable, impartial advice.
• Test your market
• Focus on one project
• Try not to compete on price
• Be a 'connoisseur' of talent
• Be resilient - when a problem occurs you have got to be able to take it on the chin.
• Satisfaction comes from running a business and seeing how big you can build it.
